Tuesday we got to go to the Medford temple, and it's really small but so pretty! It was really nice to be able to have a temple so close and to be able to go while on my mission. Going to the temple definitely helps my get through the rest of my week. I also got to see a sister from my MTC district there which was really nice.
After we got back from the temple we went to see our investigator, M, who hasn't had a lesson with the missionaries in months, but we still contact her and go visit her a lot. She seemed really happy that night which was great and she gave us plants to take home because she has a lot and she just likes giving them out. We asked her if we could set up a lesson and she said we could on Friday! She's had a lot of lessons before so she told us to spice things up a little. We decided to read Alma 14 with her because it talks about Alma and Amulek and when they tried to cry repentance to the people. The people rebelled and killed anyone who also believed hoping that Alma and Amulek would give up their religion and take back everything they said about the people being wicked, but Alma and Amulek stayed strong through the really hard times even though they were being tormented and treated like prisoners. At the end of the chapter Alma cries to God asking him when the torment will be over and at this time the people bound them and said if God is real he can release you then they all laughed at these two men. And when Alma said this to God it says that the amount of strength they had resembled the amount of faith that they had to be free. Then they broke free and everyone was freaked out. But I really liked that because the amount of strength they had resembled their faith, and that's important to remember because the more faith we have in God then the more things we will be able to overcome and do in our own lives. We thought this would be really good for M because it has a very detailed story along with principles of faith and that's what she needs. It's really cool and powerful to see that you don't teach everyone the same. We have to know each person individually and make our lessons so they connect better with the person we are teaching. I'm here to teach people individually so they feel the spirit and come closer to God not just to check another lesson off the list.
We had a lesson with K who we met on super miracle day (Saturday). She is so amazing. On Sunday when she came to church she told us that her husband didn't want her to come and he was pretty upset, but she came anyways. How powerful is that!? She knew that God wanted her to come to church and she wanted to come so she did. Right now there are a lot of difficult things she is going through and when we met with her she said that her life got so much harder since coming to church, and she knew that was Satan trying to get to her. We listened to her talk about the fact that she wants this gospel in her family’s life. We told her that it starts with her and she needs to be that example to them first and it's going to take a lot of time, but God will help her as long as she continues to pray for strength and read her scriptures every day. I was reading in my preach my gospel and it says in the section "gospel blesses families" that the home is supposed to be a place of safety and refuge and I know I had that growing up and know I want that for my future. I know how amazing K is and how strong she is and that God is going to bless her because she is willing to do everything she possibly can to help her family come to know him. She came to church on Sunday and brought her seven year old daughter and her cousin who isn't a member. He has been having a hard time, and now he wants to meet with missionaries. It's amazing to see the blessings come from being an example and wanting happiness for everyone else.
We visited the woman who told us to come back for tea and cake. She let us come in and talk to her and her son for a while and gave us some juice! She didn't seem like she wanted to take the lessons, but she said if she ever needed help in her yard she would love to give us a call. She was extremely sweet and I hope she calls us soon!
We found a couple free libraries around town where people put their free books for people to take and so sister Sowter and I like to put [copies of the] Book of Mormon in there with our card praying that people will read the book and call us!
This week I've seen a lot about being an example. And it's so important that we are examples to everyone around us. We may not know it but people look at us every day to see how we act and when we are being examples of our Savior, others will want to follow our examples. We have an investigator who Is that example in her home and her husband can see that and is changing his ways slowly. It's a miracle. This week was slower but the weekend was really full of miracles. I hope you all can remember to be examples in your every day lives. I love you all!
Love,
Sister Peterson
