Hiking by the Highway

We were able to do more service this week! We were helping the same family in our ward move on Saturday. Moving houses is a huge project I'm grateful I usually only have two suitcases full of stuff to move around.

We had more lessons with M last week! In our first lesson with him on Tuesday we taught him the plan of salvation. I knew he would love this lesson because he likes when we talk about how this gospel will bless his family. We asked him what makes him happiest in life and I knew he was going to say his daughter and then he did! It was a precious moment. He's so great because everyone we teach him he soaks up. He really understands the messages we teach because he is open to hearing them. He felt the Spirit when he came to church that first Sunday, and he already knows this is the true church so when we teach him I know he's understanding because he knows it's true and he is just loving learning more about what Heavenly Father wants for him. At the beginning of the lesson we asked him him how quitting smoking was going and he said he was down to a half a cigarette a day! He is almost there!

In our second lesson with M on Thursday sister Sowter asked M if he was still down to a half a cigarette a day, and he said no and I think sister Sowter and i looked like we were about to cry and then! M said  I haven't smoked at all today, and we almost passed out because that was not what we were expecting! We might have freaked him out a little bit cause we were so excited for him, but he knows we are just proud of him! We taught him the gospel of Jesus Christ and I got to start off the lesson! We talked to him more about baptism and why it's so important and made sure he understood that he is still preparing for baptism. I got to teach him about the Holy Ghost, and in our lesson last week when we taught the restoration we were talking about Joseph smith the Spirit was SO STRONG and he said it was an intense feeling, and so we asked him again during this lesson if he has felt that intense feeling while reading his scriptures and in between meeting with us, and he said yes! Now that he knows what the Spirit feels like he is able to recognize it every day on his own! We had another lesson with M on Sunday after church on keeping the Sabbath Day holy. Before the lesson started he told us that he took notes in Sunday school first off and that he keeps coming back to the church because of the feeling that he gets when he is here, and he also said the first time he came to church he thought " this is my church" ahh! What he said that I was freaking out it was so amazing! He knows exactly where he wants to be and is willing to do anything and everything to get there. Oh and! M said he is throwing out his ash tray today!! He's done smoking for good! We are so proud of him!

We went tracting Friday night basically in the mountains next to the highway and it felt like we were on a hike. We were walking up someone's driveway for what felt like five minutes, and we thought we saw a house so we walked farther up to it, and it ended up being a shed in the woods. Then we walked all the way back down the driveway, and knocked on some more houses and got barked at by a couple of dogs. When we left this one house we started going up the road more, and two dogs started barking at us as they came down their driveway! So we turned the other way and walked pretty fast just to be safe. Luckily we got away, but we looked back at one point and the dog was in the middle of the road staring at us.

We taught M on Saturday. The woman we did service for last week, and we had a great lesson on following the prophet. She had questions about being careful of false prophets before our lesson, but we didn't know what to expect. So we asked her "what would you say if we told you there was a living prophet on the earth today?" And she said " I would want to know who it is!" And so we showed her exactly who our prophet is! And as we were teaching she just accepted it and we told her that we know he is a real prophet because when he speaks he says all things that are good and in line with what God wants for us. It was a great lesson! And at the end we asked her to be baptized and confirmed when she comes to know the truth for herself and she said yes! She doesn't have a set date yet, but that's ok because I know she is going to come to know the truth for herself and be baptized!

We had another lesson with L this past week and we brought up her baptism date on May 21st, and all she said was " I won't be in town that day" so she forgot she was going to be baptized. It was a difficult lesson because she has been to so many different churches, and met with many people of different religions that she wants to know everything before she commits to one. But I know that we aren't going to know everything while we are here. I don't know everything and I'm teaching people. I love L to death, but if she doesn't stop fighting her faith then we might have to let her go. I learned at a zone conference from one of the missionaries recent converts that the way she was converted is she stopped looking for faults, and just started being obedient to what God wants from her. He just wants us to follow him and keep his commandments and when we understand that we will show him we love him and just do what he knows is best for us. We just have to give in to the good feelings that we feel when we go to church and learn more about why we are here.

Sister Sowter and I got to help out with the lesson in beehives on Sunday, and that's the class of girls ages 12-13. We shared scriptures which have helped us get through hard times, and why we read the Book of Mormon. I shared 1 Nephi 21:14.
I really like this scripture because it talks about how God is always with us especially when we don't think he is. It's just a constant reminder that he is with us even through the hard times when we don't think he's there. We got to share that reading the Book of Mormon makes us happier. I know that having the opportunity to read from it every day makes me a lot happier, and I am learning how to deal with every day problems. Yeah it is a book written by people forever ago, but it helps us all today because it was written for us today. I literally wake up excited to read it and that's honestly never happened to me before, and it does now because I cherish that book more than ever before. When you really understand how reading the Book of Mormon helps you and when you apply it, I know you'll feel the same way.  I never realized how much I miss Young Women's but being there was so much fun and I do miss it a lot!

We'll have a great week everyone! I love you all!

Love,
Sister Peterson
