If you don't boatnik you're not an Oregonian!

This week has been super crazy! It's boatnik weekend here in grants pass which is a huge event that happens every year over Memorial Day weekend. And people come from all around the world. It's a really big party basically! Today they had a boat race on the river and we got to go watch. Then we could walk around the fair for a couple of hours. On Saturday morning we helped out as a zone with a 5k race. We got to wear polos and guide people where the path was to keep on running. The theme was superheroes and so everyone in the race was wearing a costume which was pretty sweet!

So in case you were wondering sister Dobbs and I are doing fantastic! Her birthday was on Friday so we celebrated by eating s'mores! And also by walking around the busiest street in our area. We decided we needed to practice out street contacting which means talking to everyone we meet! It started out a little bad cause people walk super fast, but we saw this guy sitting on a bench in this small coffee shop area called Dutch bros so we decided to go talk to him! We almost chickened out, but I was like let's go! And we got up to him and without saying anything sister Dobbs stuck her hand out to shake his hand and we just introduced ourselves and started talking to him! Found out he said from England which is really funny because sister Sowter was from England  and she just left the area. And so I just sat on the bench next to him and we asked him about his life and his name is also M! We wanted to show him a video called the bread of life: change" it's all about the atonement and how our slates can be wiped clean through Jesus. We moved to a quieter bench away from the road and played the video for him. I felt the spirit so strong and because I could feel it I knew he could as well. We bore our testimonies on how much this gospel means to us and how the atonement has blessed our lives. He told us he could feel warmth inside and I told him that's the spirit. We also told him that we know how much this gospel would help him and sister Dobbs invited him to be baptized and he said "yes, you'll have to pencil that in." It was so cool! Then she told him to put it in his calendar and he did! It was a really miracle meeting M. He came to church on Sunday and then we taught him a lesson on the restoration of the church that night. I know that Heavenly Father leads us to the people that we meet every day. It's no coincidence that we were walking down 6th street and decided to talk to him specifically. It's really amazing to see how much people enjoy hearing about Jesus and all he can do to help us have a better and brighter future.

So since it is boatnik no one is home so we couldn't go tracting all weekend so our strategy was to walk, walk, and walk some more! Basically we walked a lot this past weekend. We went up and down 6th street a lot and we decided to talk to this woman who was sitting outside a bar. I really liked her shoes so I complimented her and it turned in to this entire event of things! Ready? Ok so we found out she is a less active and she was in town with her friend for the day and then this guy came out of the bar and he told us that he is a less a less active member too! I was actually able to bear my testimony on prayer with him because he says he prays a lot. I told him that prayer is amazing because we get to talk to Heavenly Father any time of the day every day and he knows everything about us so it's easy to have a good talk with him and ask him for help. He told us his sons went on missions and he lives out of the area. Then this drunk guy comes up and starts falling over everything while we are talking to people and then the cops show up and arrested him. And everyone blamed it on boatnik weekend. Crazy things are happening here! But because there were so many people we had a lot of great conversations about how God loves us all equally. We saw this man sitting on a bench and decided to go talk to him. His name is O and the first thing he said to us was "i was a Mormon" and we were like oh cool! Then we found out he just went to church a couple times when he was younger and he was never baptized. It was really cool because with him I could really feel the spirit guiding us on what to say. We were talking to him and teaching him based on what he needed to hear. It was a really amazing experience and after a while of talking he said we could talk again! All because we followed the spirits direction.

We decided that we didn't want to walk around anymore and we wanted to go to the park to play some ball. Ok we wanted to find people playing basketball and challenge them. We saw two guys playing basketball at the park and we went up and made a deal. If we won they had to listen to us talk about Jesus if they won we would come back another day with ice cream. So we played horse and guess what? We won! So we went and sat on a bench and talked to them about how God loves all of us and how happy being a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints makes us. It was super cool and they were both really nice. It was good to have a relaxed easy conversation with them. All because we schooled them in a game of horse!

Something I want everyone to take in to this next week is to have complete faith in Christ, trust that he is always there for you and to know that if you reach your hand up God will lift you up. It's amazing being able to help people understand the atonement and how they can remove their pains and feel pure joy. I love being a missionary and I love knowing that God is always on my side. I'm grateful to be a member of this church and to know this gospel. I love all of you and so does Heavenly Father. Have a fantastic week everyone!

Love,
